It might seem that cavalry was the least useful in heavy fortress combat. However, sometimes a surprise attack of determined and well-commanded cavalry could bring surprising effects. In 1806 the famous "Hellish Brigade" (the 5th and 7th regiments of Hungarian hussars) in Napoleon’s army, commanded by General Lasalle and numbering 700 soldiers forced the Prussian garrison of Szczecin Fortress to surrender. This is what Napoleon wrote to Murat then: "If your Hungarian hussars keep capturing fortresses, I will have to dissolve artillery and sapper units".
