Till the time the fortress was liquidated, most fortress buildings in Zamość had masonry-covered slopes. The structure of powerful defensive walls in fortifications was not uniform. A continuous wall hit many times or strained with underground tunnels might collapse, providing access to the fortress. Consequently, a system of frame ribs and horizontal arches was used to build them. A defensive wall was like a brick or masonry bridge with many spans, covered with earth and placed on its side. Such structure was more stable, transferred overload to the ground better at the time of firing and if one span was damaged, the breach was not very big because the neighbouring spans were able to hold the pressure of earth.
