Artillery units started to use uniforms in colours which resembled the colours of the earth relatively early. Jackets of
Legia Nadwiślańska artillery units as well as those of the artillery of the Duchy of Warsaw and the Congress Kingdom of Poland were dark green. Russian artillery units also wore dark green uniform jackets. Austrian artillery soldiers wore dark brown jackets with red revers and shakoes with putties made from horse tail hair. Fortress artillery usually wore more modest uniforms and the most modest clothes were worn by convoy soldiers. Service in these units which performed an important function by supplying soldiers with necessary goods had been treated as less honourable for many years. This attitude changed when apart from live horses also mechanical horses started to become part of the army. Black leather jackets and glasses worn by soldiers of supply units became their pride and a sign of distinction. However, it happened at the beginning of the 20th century.
