Western front of the fortress, on the back of the Zamoyski Palace , was once entirely doused by water . First internal work
Indicative visualization of the curtain between Bastions III and IV from the west view . Made by K. Chajdys
did not stand on its foreland until 1810 . Seven years later they sketched , at least partially realized, very modern design of the defense with two powerful redoubts which stood forward until the other side of the backwaters of the Łabuńka River . In the project from 1825 Jan Mallet-Malletski withdrew from the direction of the development of the fortress, burying the backwater and locating here redans which were staying regularly and very close to the walls of the fortress – one of them was performing new functions of ravelin before curtain, the second one – the demi-lone of the bastion III. Water which was left in a ditch- manhole, perhaps it enabled to make moats in case of emergency.
This fragment , Although it is not rebuilt in the same way but only highlighted - in fact, it represents the biggest progress related to the situation before 2011, being the modern extension of the city park, which is known to be skillfully adapted by Valerian Kronenberg but not copied, fortified landscape . On the curtain number 3 and 4 the wall escarpment is not fully restored but only recalled, as this part of the fortress which looked in its heyday. The whole curtain relics were discovered during excavations in 2011. Earlier, after blowing up and demolishing the walls , here only remained with overgrown self-sown , an irregular slope over a marshy area called the Monkey Grove . In the center , over the exposed and reinforced postern, was marked a very interesting defensive device from 30s of the nineteenth century, but ideologically inherent in the Napoleonic era. it was a casemate to the fire front, built perpendicularly to the shaft, which was called the traverse. The work which was done under the project : “Zamość – the city of UNESCO , a monument of the history of the Republic of Poland as a tourist product of the Polish economy ‘’ restored, lost for over a hundred years, a view of the fortress from the west. This required significant changes in urban planning, including a change the route of the street. Thanks to that we recovered a place for highlighting the redan, which was performing functions of ravelin, which stands before the curtain between the bastions 3 and 4. Its partial reconstruction with the control and planting of greenery, allowed the creation of park space with a great vantage point of the Old Town. It also regulates the channel irrigation of the park pond . The work, which lasted throughout the year 2012 will not be the last word on this area . They allow for the consistent continuation in the future - and the creation of special fortress gardens and a larger water region in front of Bastion III.
