WALL I-VII WITH THE LWOWSKA GATES)

Eastern front of the fortress was not protected by natural obstacles , so it was difficult to defend. Here on the south of the bastion VII, was situated the Lviv gate , now called the old, which was built by Bernardo Morando after 1599.She received her final form at the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In the Napoleonic epoch the Army of Warsaw in front of gate have done a ravelin in the form of redan . In the central part of the curtain VII-I there was a postern which facilitated the communication between guardians and the external fortifications.

During the age of the Congress Kingdom ,circa 1820 , general J.Mallet-Malletski made a decision about walling up the gate and building a new one at the place of the old postern . In that way a new gate of Lviv was created. It was soon covered by the reconstructed redan . Walled old Lviv gate and a new gate , of project by Jan Paweł Lelewel , from the side of the city was connected by the string of the casemates , later called subwall , which was opened to the street near the foothills of the fortress shaft . This fortification existed till the liquidation of the stronghold . After deletion of the stronghold , the curtain was destroyed and between two gates there was situated a new entrance to the city . In 1937 , actions were initiated to rebuilt the Old Lwowska Gate , the work which was carried out under the direction of Jan Zachwatowicz was interrupted by the war . Finally the reconstruction of the stonework of the gate was completed in 1979 . The New Gate in 1990 was adapted for the headquarters of Orchestra of K. Namysłowski . Within the project : “Zamość – the city of UNESCO , a monument of the history of the Republic of Poland as a tourist product of the Polish economy ‘’ there was made a hard and thorough reconstruction of foreland of the New Lwowska Gate . A highlighted ravelin in the form of earth redan had to be reconciled with a parking ,which was essential for functioning of (also for tourism ) the city of Zamość . The system of car parks and green squares is a reference to the geometry of glacis of ravelin . A few years ago an initiation of the New private buildings, which should have been treated with respect, on the foreground of Lviv Gate additionally made it more difficult to revalorize the east part of the stronghold. And because of that the elements were contractually highlighted . More faithfully reproduce of the fortified landscape will occur at the time of the decision to restore a nonexistent curtain with a subwall, connecting the two gates of the fortress.
