Bastion VII of Bernardo Morando’s project, built before 1618 was soon modernized by Andrea dell'Aqua (1618-23).

At the end of 17th century, Jan Michał Link added the ground retrenchment and the brick counterguard. But the greatest modernization of the strengthening of the Eastern Front that was started by Col Jean-Baptiste Mallet in 1809 and was ended by the same constructor but now as the General Jean-Baptist Mallet-Malletski in ‘20s of the 19th c. The casemates of the bastion were thoroughly rebuilt by adding a shooting gallery and in 1825-27 at the back of the bastion the powerful retrenchment was added that on the three floors (the upper sheltered by the demountable roof) holds the great gunrests and barracks from the side of the city. The retrenchment is one of the few defensive guns of the fortress that with no significant damage has survived to our times. During the cassation of the fortress , the drains walls and casemates of the bastion were completely blown up and so significantly graded that the great retrenchment was standing on the flat terrain and it did not look like in any way the fortification bastion. As a result the greater importance was given to the reconstruction of the bastion in 1977-1984. After a series of tests the bastion was rebuilt in the state from the mid-1970s, however with some indication of the previous phases of the reconstruction. Although the restoration was incomplete, bastion and its casemates began to fulfill an important cultural role, as a symbol of the reconstructed fortress of Zamość.
The casemates served periodic exhibitions and events. Despite the proper conservation project - materials that were applied over 30 years ago, were not of satisfactory class. The reconstructed bastion required an urgent repair, which was made according to the project “Maintenance, renovation and adaptation for cultural purposes of the fortification of the Old City in Zamość”. The project was approved for implementation in 2009. Back then, there was created the department of the Museum of Colors, Weapons and Fortifications, containing, among others, the reconstructions of dozens of uniforms from the era.
