comes from the earliest phase of fortress building (1596-1600), according to Bernardo Morando’s project which,

was modernized by Andrea dell’Aqua w latach 1618-1623 Andrea dell’ Aqua in years 1618-1623 (introduction of the shoulder casemates) by Jan Michał Link in years 1685-1694 and finally in times of Duchy of Warsaw and the Kingdom of Poland [Congress Poland] (rebuilding of the shoulder casemates, building of the large casemate building the so-called “Defensive traverse” and expansion of outer fortifications). The shoulder casemates retained – Western, for a couple of years functioning as a vegetables warehouse; Eastern, totally buried, since II World War it was adapted for air-raid shelter, later completely forgotten and cut off. Works at partly rebuilding the Bastion I started in IV quarter of 2007, within the framework of the PL0023 project “Conservation, renovation and adaptation of the group of fortifications in the Old Town in Zamość”. The realization of the project lasts until the end of 2009. Value of the whole project according to Financial Agreement: 8 550 977 €. Bailout from the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism: 5 901 884 €. Bailout within the frames of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage Promise Operational Program: 1 500 000 PLN. Promoter of the project is the City of Zamość. Within the frames of these works one thoroughly restored the Western casemate together with a part of the curtain. In the underground building, the club of Eastern martial arts lovers has found its place. Next stage of reconstructing the bastion are years 2009-20012 and European Union bailout within the frames of the project “Zamość UNESCO’s town, memorial of history of Republic of Poland as a touristic product of Polish economy”. Atypical project (of Cracow Polytechnic and Planning and Engineering Office from Szczecin) allowed to create an outline of overall dimensions of bastion by means of soil masses and with keeping the existing railway. Bastion as a decorated park terrain, viewpoint joined by two footbridges above the railway which is running through the lines of bastion’s embankment. Eastern shoulder casemate was also rebuilt and made accessible.
