“Wybraniecka” infantry was a Polish military unit in the 16th -17th centuries, set up in King Stefan Batory’s
times in Poland in 1578 and in Lithuania in 1592. The units consisted of farmers working in royal fields. They were obliged to undergo military training and join the army in full armour if there was a war. Infantry wore blue uniforms; the colour was introduced by King Stafan Batory in the 16th century and was used throughout the 17th century. The choice of the colour resulted from infantry tradition started by Zygmunt August in 1557. The colour became so popular that some Polish noblemen dressed their privately recruited soldiers in blue-coloured uniforms..
