Crashing fortifications with gunfire in the 17th century was not easy at all. Demolition fire from a half kartouwe from a distance ranging from 180 to 300 m meant that a ball penetrated 40 cm deep into the wall. To cause a 1x1 m breach in a fortification wall, it was necessary to hit the same spot at least three times, which was not easy because the accuracy of 17th century artillery was far from perfect. It increased with a shorter distance but then the gun crew was more exposed to enemy fire.
