The fortress tomorrow

The contemporary form of the southern part of Zamość Fortress is just the first step to its complete reconstruction. It is the first time that we can have had an idea of what the fortress looked like – a magnificent silhouette of the town above the line of bastioned fortifications. Further steps need to be taken to combine and improve the project. As far the southern part of the fortress is concerned, the main objective is to combine elements which have been well preserved with those which have not survived in a good condition. Some elements, such as the Szczebrzeska Gate, needed only conservation whereas others, such as Bastion II and Bastion III needed partial or complete reconstruction, with Bastion I needing only to be outlined. Similarly, only parts of ravelins have been reconstructed; the ravelin in front of the Szczebrzeska Gate has shortened faces and a lowered profile due to a road which runs in front of it. Only one arm of the ravelin in front of curtain wall I-II has been recreated; the other one could not be reconstructed because of the existing railway track. The project does not include Rotunda Zamojska – a place of martyrdom of residents of Zamość and Ziemia Zamojska during WW II. In its neck there is a cemetery of WW II victims and a park. Conservation works concerning Rotunda must be coordinated with improvement of its surroundings. A landscape of the future of this part of Zamość will consist of a well-organised system of roads without the existing railway track and properly-arranged Rotunda and its surroundings as well as reconstructed ravelins and curtain wall I-II, which will take us several years to do.
