Bastion III must have been the most impressive one in spite of the fact that it was not the largest. Jan Paweł Lelewel
The view of Bastion III before 1842, after the reconstructions from the beginning of the 19th c. but retaining the features of the two leveled bastion of Jan Michał Link.
painted it in its early form, after remodelling carried out during the Duchy of Warsaw, which preserved its 17th century appearance. The artist managed to grasp a very important moment in fortress modernization; Bastion IV on the left has already been remodelled, as evidenced by numerous embrasures but it is Bastion III which still dominates the marshy ground, a remnant of “Small Pond” – the overflow area of the Łabuńka River in front of the western part of the fortress. The central part of the bastion, looking like a retrenchment, still soars above the rest of the structure whose flanks are lowered. A low scarp wall and a huge earthen embankment, elevated probably during the reinforcement of the fortress at the time of the Duchy of Warsaw attract our attention. The bastion must have commanded respect of artillerymen and riflemen both because of its appearance and resistance to the gunfire of contemporary cannons.

The watercolor by Jan Paweł Lelewel, probably idealized one, shows how the fortress should look like after the realization of the plan from 1817. This is one of the most credible showings of Zamość of that time.

  • Ravelin in front of the Szczebrzeska Gate and Bastion III after the reconstruction.. The state is compatible with the Jan Mallet-Malletski’s project from 1825, but the drawing by Jan Paweł Lelewel is slightly fantastical. It shows idealized landscape and the great caponier in front of the front of Bastion III, which has never been real
