In the former army there was a great and small uniform. However, it was not the size that mattered but the purpose of the uniform. The great uniform, also called a formal one was worn during important occasions, such as parades and balls. What may seem strange to us is that an officer in his great uniform and not in a comfortable, ergonomic and camouflage uniform (the small uniform) would also participate in a battle. The small uniform was worn during everyday service and was not as elegant or decorative as the great uniform.
