Unlike other units, rifle regiments with their line order and barrage fire were mainly used for firing over a larger distance, eliminating enemy’s officers and cannon crews. This is how Jäger (from a German word meaning a “hunter”) units came into being. They flourished in the 1890s. The units fought in a loose order, were used for reconnaissance functions, guarded the front army or, at retreat, guarded its back. One of the most famous unit of this type was British 95th Rifle Regiment. Russian units were also famous and the most famous unit of this type in Austro-Hungarian army was Tiroler Kaisersjäger Regiment No 3, whose one privilege was to march with music through the premises of the emperor’s palace, irrespective of the time of the day.
