Bastion IV had been completed before 1605 and may have been modernized in 1618-23 by Andrea dell’Aqua (introduction

of flank casemates), which is proved by the changes included in successive plans. In the third quarter of the 17th century the bastion had two symmetrical orillons* and a berm with obtuse flank angles, in 1704 only one orillon at the northern face and a total of 9 loop holes, in 1772 still one orillon but with a masonry cannon stand at the upper level of the flank. When the fortress was stormed on 20 May 1809, the right (northern) face of the bastion collapsed, which made thorough modernization necessary. An earthen retrenchment was built then in the gorge; it also constitutes extension of the embankment of the northern curtain wall. It was equipped with a postern * ensuring communication of the platform of the bastion with the bend. At the same time a four-sided lunette was built in front of the western face of the bastion, inside Small Pond and an earthen embankment in the north, on the edge of the pond. The northern face of the bastion collapsed again in 1817 and had to be converted starting from the foundations. In 1818-20 a major part of the bastion was rebuilt; it was covered with a new wall, had loop holes and two new casemates in its flanks. The effect is shown on watercolours by Jan Paweł Lelewel. In 1831 the retrenchment in the gorge of the bastion was elevated. In spite of all the work, in 1850 again cracks appeared in the walls. The walls were demolished after closing down the fortress but the earthen forms were not changed and have been preserved. During a great repair of the bastion, external fortifications were also changed; in place of the former lunette, a large foreground was made in front of the bastion. It also avoided destruction with only its breastwork being lost. Thanks to setting up the Town Park in this part of the fortress in 1919 (designed by Walerian Kronenberg), the forms which remained were slightly changed but the general shape has been preserved.

  • A thorough reconstruction of Bastion IV in the early stages – according to the watercolor by Jan Paweł Lelewel. . Still visible massive bastion in its form, probably from the time of Jan Michał Link, with far protruding ears (orylons) and recessed neck. There is a process going on of driving piles with the help of kafar.
