Whenever we talk about a detached loop-holed wall built alongside the moat in Zamość Fortress we call it “Carnot wall”. Lazare Carnot was a French mathematician, politician and military engineer, the author of a new military doctrine, later used by Napoleon. Carnot invented the basic rank of infantry to be used for attack; thanks to the loose rank called the “extended line” as opposed to the tight line, losses in men were smaller because soldiers were dispersed.
