Economy” programme, it is a continuation of a very modern idea, implemented at the time of the Second Republic of Poland. By means of decorative greenery, the park preserves the most important elements of fortification facilities. Today’s form of Bastion IV is not only tidied-up ruin resulting from blowing up the bastion; it is a 20th century architectural work fashioned on the former defensive work. An island in the park, a remnant of the bastion’s counterguard, has been similarly shaped. Modern, harmonious and picturesque combination of a Modernist garden with fortification elements is a source of inspiration for a recently started process of reconstruction of the fortification landscape of Zamość Fortress. It was the first example of a unique and creative attitude to devastated fortification landscapes in independent Poland, which provided a possibility of developing the properties of the landscape without erasing the military identity of the site.
