When Zamość Fortress was being expanded and equipped with external facilities, such as the lunette, it was smoothbore firearms that prevailed. The sizes of muzzle-loading cannons were not defined, as is the case today by means of calibre, i.e. the diameter of the barrel but by means of gauge, i.e. the weight of a stone cannonball which could be fitted into the barrel, expressed in pounds. Obviously, stone cannonballs were no longer used in the 19th century but the classification system remained the same.
