Major part of Zamość Fortress was based on a system of bastions, which originated in southern Europe in the 16th century and followed the Turkish model which, in turn, came from the Middle East and India. The lunette described above and the caponier supplemented bastioned fortifications and belonged to a new system of polygonal fortifications in which heavy fire from relatively small structures with casemates played a more important part than power and strength of defensive walls.
