Zamość was not only a merchant town but also an important fortress in the defence system of the Republic of Poland.

As one of few Polish towns, Zamość Fortress withstood the siege of Swedish troops during their invasion of Poland in the middle of the 17th century. Military significance caused its fortifications to be developed at the time of the Duchy of Warsaw and the Congress Kingdom of Poland when Zamość became a state fortress. Fortunately, turning Zamość into a garrison town and modernization of fortifications did not affect its Renaissance appearance.
